Pregnancy Diary | Weeks 26-29

Hear that? That strange popping sound, like someone just cracked their knuckle? Oh, wait that’s coming from me. FROM WITHIN ME. Google tells me this is fine and normal in pregnancy and nobody can agree if it’s the ligaments popping and stretching from baby’s (much stronger) kicks or air bubbles or *shudder* baby’s own joints. Excuse me whilst I nip to the loo for the umpteenth time today. Snowmageddon has finally hit London and I’m going stir crazy being cooped up inside. No wonder my baby’s kicks are getting stronger and stronger- she’s probably feeling the same. Welcome to the third trimester, it’s a weird and wacky little place to be! 


The grumpiness I felt in the previous week has worn off, so there’s that going for me right now. I’m still super uncomfortable carrying sideways baby and have gotten into the swing of counting her kicks every night. Sometimes, I hit 10 kicks in 4 minutes. A few times, in half an hour. Like her mumma, I suppose the mood to exercise comes and goes.

My baby app tells me she’s like the size of a cabbage or something. Whatever, I’m sure a cabbage would feel more comfortable in my belly.


I make an appointment for a maternity massage at the Cowshed (see post here) and for an hour, those aches and pains are blissfully gone. I can’t help but notice that I’m that person that everyone now does that fast overtaking on the pavement thing, that I used to do when confronted by a slow walker. My hormones, those mad little things, make me want to do a cry like I’m in last place in the relay race on Sports Day. I’m not slow, I promise! I am still an Olympic paced fast walker like any seasoned Londoner!


Another week, a new midwife appointment and OFFICIALLY in the third trimester now. Before my checkup, me and Robin head to Harley Street to get our 4D baby scan. IT IS AMAZING. So far, his nose, my lips. She’s definitely been spared the Bowron chin (‘affectionately’ known as the meat sack) 

Afterwards, I head to the hospital because the Children’s Centre where I normally have my check up’s is closed at half term. A student midwife joins us and I grill her about nursing and what she’s seen on the labour wards so far. She’s nice, I like her and then wonder if she’ll be the one to see my vajajay come Delivery Day. Everything measures fine and dandy- I get an Uber home and spend the journey listening to the driver’s Grime mixtape. I’m definitely not into it- end up giving him 5 stars anyway.


Aka, the week of all the tears.

I cry at Queer Eye on Netflix and genuinely feel like the Fab Five could bring about world peace. I cry in the shower because I can’t comfortably shave my legs anymore. I’m not sure I can even see my legs anymore, over this baby bump which has suddenly BLOOMED. I hear popping noises coming from WITHIN my bump. A quick google later tells me this is either my ligaments popping from baby karate kicks or air bubbles. Umm, that’s nice?

Napping like a beast again, which usually means me/baby/bump are going through a growth spurt. Getting in and out of bed means lots of grunting and loud ‘oofs’. I’m also popping Rennie’s like they’re sweets because the heartburn is reaaaal.


AND HERE WE ARE NOW! A bonus week catchup.

I hit a bit of a panic at 30 weeks. Anytime from 37 weeks is classed as full term and there’s so much to do and I feel like I’m herding cats trying to get things organised. Not to mention, I FEEL HUGE and my energy levels have definitely dropped.

A bout of lurgy that I’m still trying to throw off has stopped me from doing pretty much anything apart from cough for the better part of a week. Yesterday, I finally managed to finish painting the nursery wall (if there was a paint colour that I could swim in, it’d be Calamine from Farrow and Ball)

My mum came over the other day and brought with her a V shaped pillow that I’ve been attached to ever since. It’s the comfiest thing ever- just the right amount of softness and firmness- and helps me to sleep. At this point in pregnancy, sleep is hard! Gone are the days of closing my eyes and drifting off. I think it’s starting to affect my sanity and most definitely my patience.

And so, I’m sat up in my little sick bay cocoon on the sofa watching the snow fall outside. It’s nice and calming and I feel like I’m in the middle of a snow globe. Here’s to defeating this horrible bug and getting shit done, stat!

Cowshed’s Udderly Gorgeous Maternity Massage

I decided to save it for when I really needed it, which turns out, is right about now! Seven months of pregnancy has given me a basketball belly and an achy back and I couldn’t think of anything nicer than an hour inside a dimly lit spa room. Ducking off to the left of Carnaby Street and onto Foubert’s Place, slightly away from the crowds, I entered the Cowshed store 15 minutes before my appointment. I was then checked in and seated around a big farm house style table with lemon and cucumber water- so far, so very spa like. Except, shoppers come and go around you to buy the famous Cowshed lotions and potions.

I sipped on my lemon water and attempted to de-stress, despite my bladder screaming at me and a baby that decided to learn the Macarena at that very moment in my womb. Shortly afterwards, my beauty therapist came to get me and brought me downstairs to the underbelly of this particular Cowshed location. My room was dimly lit, a robe was hanging up waiting for me to slip into, and in the corner of my eye, a tub of warm bubbly water to soak my feet was ready too.

So rather than lying back or on your front on a massage table, you’ll be manoeuvred into baby friendly positions instead.

Once my feet had soaked for a few minutes in the warm sudsy water, my feet were dried off and I was helped onto a stool facing the massage table. On the table was a large V shaped pillow- so you lean on the pillow with your arms and head, whilst the rest of you is seated comfortably on the stool as the masseuse gently prods you like a piece of focaccia dough. It’s lovely.

I was so comfortable. And it’s been months since I’ve been comfortable- the relief! I’d have bought that pillow on the spot right there and then because for the next few minutes I remembered what it was like to get comfy and drift off without grunting from side to side like a turtle stuck on their back.

The therapist gently massaged and soothed my aching back with warm oil- as we chatted, she told me about her own pregnancy experience, so she really knew which spots to work on to help those aches and pains (for me, my lower back has been a constant sore spot!) 

Too soon afterwards, I was helped onto the massage table that had been adjusted to support my back and legs specially. My feet, legs, arms and shoulders were worked on, and even my scalp had a little bit of soothing massage applied to it.

I was really looked after- regularly asked if I’d like to take a sip of water- and helped up and down from the massage table. I’ve had many massages before, but this was the first one where I felt considered if that makes sense.

I’ve only ever had spa treatments or massages at hotels when I’m on a holiday break, so going from a massage and back into my clothes was a little bit strange to me. I had to carefully towel myself down so I wouldn’t slick oil everywhere on the way home (although on the tube home, I found a nice dollop of it behind my ear) 

I wouldn’t even class this as a treat for mums-to-be- it’s practically medicinal!

I found it so helpful towards the aches and pains the last 7 months have accumulated in my body. I went to sleep last night for the first time without an ache in my back and slept much better than usual. Pregnancy Diary | Weeks 23-25

Feeling more like I’m in Week 325 and getting ready to birth Godzilla baby, yet also simultaneously wailing “it’s going by sooo quickly” I am now able to say to people, yes I’m 6 months pregnant, rather than the I’m xx weeks gone now. I totally get why mums refer to their children as being eleventy billion weeks old, because you get used to counting down milestones in weeks rather than months. Although, if I ever refer to my child as being 26 months old or whatever, please punch me in the face. I’ll start with Week 23 because I can’t remember much about the weeks before other than I felt like a normal person again. Once I hit about 17 weeks, the morning sickness miraculously disappeared overnight and I slowly regained my energy back. Weeks 18, 19, and 20 came along and a scan informed us we were having a bouncing, baby girl. Well, more like a shy, sleepy one because I had to spend our hospital appointment walking up and down the corridor and then resorting to jumping jacks in order to make her move and show her face to the sonographers. That’s my girl, being stubborn even in utero. From then on until I was 23 weeks, I got my energy back, the breakouts on my face had calmed down, and I felt pretty good! Annnd then we meet Week 24…


Man, oh, man. The rainbows and sparkles of the previous weeks disappeared overnight. I felt like Zombie Slug Me again. I wanted to sleep all the time. The mysterious phantom smells that tormented me in the first trimester returned- I’m convinced our house smells like onions and garlic. Robin says it doesn’t. I can tell when the bins need taking out days before they need to. I’m 90% nose and 10% human now. Whenever I get hit with the Sleepy stick, I know that I’m basically going through a growth spurt so just succumb to needing to lie down and nap but still feel really guilty about it.


Hello, I am a monster.

The crankiest grump from Planet Grump ever.

I dare you to empty the dishwasher without a tut or a huff from me. Everything is irritating. 

I think the combination of sleepless nights and the rush of hormones circulating around inside me has created this frankenstein of rawr-ness. For the first time in months, I felt that old familiar thumping in my chest that used to indicate an anxiety attack coming on, so I just stopped everything and had a lie down (I’m not sure where the anxiety has popped up from, possibly the pressure I’m putting on myself to finish the nursery)

My most recent midwife appointment revealed that my baby is sitting horizontally- or lying across ways- because of course she is and that might be why my belly feels a bit tender. I’ve also got the worst backache on my right side, sore hips and a waddle walk because it’s the only thing that makes walking feel comfortable. Hands up if you remember Mrs Fratelli in the Goonies? Because, hello, that is also me. I am a huffing, puffing, (grumpy) scary old woman. My bump, even bigger now than even two weeks ago is making me a walking, talking, heavy breathing little lump. It doesn’t take much to make me huff and puff and blow this house down. Even bending down to pick something up (say, a 13 pound cat for instance) will have me huffling.


Okay woes is being dramatic. But in my head, I really really want it finished before April so I can enjoy my last few weeks without a to do list. I keep reminding myself that we’ve got a bedside crib, we’ve got a car seat and we’ve got a baby carrier, so we’re doing alright. But going against my own nesting instincts is driving me potty. We’ve still got a list of items to buy and some reorganising and painting and oyyyyy here come the eye twitches.


The worst symptom after morning sickness. I can deal with discomfort and pain but the mysterious phantom smells that only my nose can smell drives me up the wall. In my first trimester, I couldn’t stand the smell of our flat and banished all my scented candles to my sister’s house. Our living room had a weird plant smell, the kitchen reeked of onions and garlic and all I could smell in the bedroom was my wardrobe. And then one morning, just like that- it stopped. Like morning sickness, the fog of it lifted overnight. BUT NOW IT IS BACK. The onion and garlic smell is the strongest; and no matter how many times I ask Robin if it smells, he says no. Phantom pregnancy smells- the worst.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”2″ accent_color=”#ff8d6b”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]HOWEVER, despite all the weird aches and pains, the phantom smells and aversions…I can’t wait to meet our baby. My sister in law just had her baby this week, and it’s stirred up all feelings of excitement about getting to meet ours soon too. It’s been lovely watching Robin getting excited for the first baby in his family. Even though I tell myself, I can’t possibly get any more uncomfortable, I know it’s going to be worth it come D day. And maybe that’s the biggest quirk? You go through a roller coaster ride watching your body shape shift and experience the not always so fun consequences of it- but the contagious excitement of impending motherhood, and babyhood, and of the milestones to come- you forget what you went through to get there.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

my pregnancy essentials (so far!)

[dropcap]P[/dropcap]regnancy has been both a wonderful and weird time for me. Wonderful to watch my growing baby belly, and weird the adjustments my body has to go through. I was completely floored by morning sickness in the early days and now in the run up to my third and final trimester, I feel like I’ve got some pregnancy essentials down to make life more comfortable. Funny that having an ever growing bump on your front is actually uncomfortable! but these are the bits and pieces that have made pregnancy a little bit easier so far. I wish I had invested in these sooner, but one of the best things you can buy for yourself at the start is a good maternity bra. Your usual bras will become the enemy (as will shower heads) because your bosoms will be very sore and seemingly enormous overnight. Ditch the underwire (or any wire) asap and give into the world of maternity underwear! I especially like the maternity/nursing bras as they will continue to be useful once baby arrives- but at the moment they keep my ladies in check and in comfort. Not sure I’ll ever wear a normal bra again to be honest! ASOS and New Look do multipacks for a reasonably affordable price and TK Maxx will always have a few well priced gems.

Morning sickness is the worst. I was a ghost of myself for those first few weeks! My morning sickness survival kit consisted of Sea Band motion sickness wrist bands (they seemed to help, and I was so desperate I’d have tried anything) plus they’re fairly cheap on Amazon. Other remedies like ginger biscuits didn’t do a thing for me however citrus scents really helped- especially lemon. A sniff of a lemon really did help me and I even desperately packed one in my handbag at one point as an emergency measure! I also found that I couldn’t stomach water but fizzy Fanta or Sprite was do-able. Lastly, I used to keep a bag of boiled sweets around to give me a burst of energy as I wasn’t able to eat.

Dipping back into the murky world of maternity, as my bump booped out (this happened to me early! I was barely 12 weeks when my belly let loose) I had to ditch my faithful jeans for maternity leggings. I actually prefer leggings to maternity jeans because I don’t have to keep pulling them up- also, finding a good pair of maternity jeans is hard. I only felt okay in the Topshop Joni style which seemed to sell out all the time! I also found Over the Bump styles more comfortable as I didn’t have anything restricting my expanding belly. My maternity leggings are from New Look and only have minimal bobbling despite the fact I live in them. However my H&M ones make me feel more pulled in and together and I suspect will last longer as the material is thicker.

One aversion I’ve experienced that hasn’t gone away after my first trimester is SMELLS. I’m still super sensitive to anything strongly fragranced (and I still can’t light a scented candle) Everyone sings the praises of Palmer’s Cocoa Butter and Bio Oil, but even these scents were too overpowering to my nose. I ended up buying a big sensible bottle of E45 lotion that’s virtually unscented and it’s been fab– 6 months in and I’ve (knock wood) not had a single stretch mark materialise.

Finding a comfortable sleeping position is still something I struggle with every night (and when you do get comfy you have to get up to use the loo!) Luckily, I didn’t have to splash out any extra cash for a special pregnancy pillow as I already have a bolster pillow- a long, cylindrical shaped pillow that I’ve had for years and have been able to bend around me wherever I needed the support. On nights it hasn’t helped, a cushion between my knees or under my belly has helped too; so for that reason alone I wouldn’t say “go buy a special pregnancy pillow” (unless you really wanted to) but my bolster pillow has certainly helped!

What works for me might now work for everyone, but the relief and comfort a few simple items have provided has been huge. It can feel overwhelming sometimes when you think ohmygod, I’m going to need x, y, z and an entirely new wardrobe but really you don’t need much for yourself; save the pennies for baby clothes and gadgets (which are way more fun)[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Nursery ideas & inspiration

[dropcap]H[/dropcap]itting both the ‘New Year, Fresh Page‘ feeling and then delving into my first nesting instincts of pregnancy has made me push for getting our spare room, I mean the nursery, ready for our Spring baby. I’m a whisper away from hitting the 6 month mark and at the moment, not only have we not done anything to prepare the room but I’ve been stashing the occasional new baby onesie into a spare handbag because there’s nowhere to put baby’s mini outfits! So, I did what I normally do when I need to streamline my ideas- I hit Pinterest. I actually found it a useful tool when we were renovating the flat enabling me to keep my visuals in one place. From colours to decor, to helping me in keeping with the look I had in mind, it helped loads with giving our home the same palette and style throughout. I want tones of blush, grey and yellow- nothing overly girly or gender specific- but now that we know we are indeed having a girl, I admit I hit the Farrow and Ball website to buy sample pots of different pinks! The spare room at the moment is very neutral- silver grey carpet, white walls, with a black feature wall and a very cool black geometric ceiling light from Ikea. It’s basically the opposite of baby.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I turned to Farrow and Ball because I loved the finish from when I painted the doors in our flat. I’m also only painting accents rather than the whole room, and found that one tub of paint goes a long way without breaking the bank.

Calamine– a very pale pink and my first choice so far to repaint the black alcove.

Middleton Pink – a pastel pink that might be too girly and saccharine for my taste but I’d like to see and compare.

Cinder Rose– a wild card pick! If the pale tones are too subtle in the room, maybe this will pop instead.

Purbeck Stone– the same grey colour we’ve used throughout the flat and would compliment everything.

Citron– a golden yellow that I’m using as an accent colour reference. I like that it’s not too mustard toned or too in your face. A few decorative items in this colour would be enough to provide those pops of yellow I’d like.

I have a thing for polka dot bedding at the moment, and I’d like to find some for the crib- especially something like the black and white print that H&M came out with earlier in the year.

A sheepskin rug or two will soften the room up and for no particular reason other than ‘ooh, pretty‘ are gold star garlands and felt cloud mobiles. I have always wanted baby animal prints for the nursery, especially ones from the Animal Print Shop- however, those babies are £££. So, I might get one or two small sized ones and on the main wall get a gold framed print of “Hold Me Closer Tiny Dancer” in a large size- maybe A0?

I’ve also always wanted a felt animal bust too. Okay, I really mean, I’ve always wanted a felt flamingo on the wall, because of course. There’s a few on Etsy so I’m confident I’ll find the one soon! I’m also in love with Land of Nod, a US based online shop that luckily ships to the UK. I think the pencil cushion and metallic star would look sweet in the baby’s crib.

Animals, stars, and a quirky thing or two with soft textiles.

There’s a lot to do which I try to stay calm over- we’ve got to remove the day bed (my most urgent to do) replace the curtains (I hate the current ones, they were just a temporary measure over the summer) rehome some bits that were dumped in there (ahem, drying racks and sports bags) and start making it a baby room- a crib, a changing station, somewhere to put her clothes, and I’d like to track down a rocking chair to nurse in.

I think once I start painting areas, I’ll feel better about the situation. Just planning and prepping mood boards makes me feel a million times more productive already! I really want to make it baby ready so I can get mentally ready for baby’s arrival- important when you are prone to panic and anxiety attacks! (on that note, I need to update my pregnancy diaries!)



Merry and Bright and Braxton Hicks

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]hristmas 2017, over and out. I hope yours was full of merriness and brightness and even if it wasn’t, that’s okay too. I like this inbetween period- that weird limbo when Christmas is over but you’re still at home alternating between the Quality Street and Celebration tubs. My Christmas Day was nice despite burning myself on the oven tray twice and risking a vomathon trying to ensure I ate a morsel each of Christmas dinner into my squashed stomach.Even though Christmas is great on the day, I think it’s the run up and this limbo period afterwards that I enjoy. The time spent with family, the fact that everyone kind of switches off from the rat race to wear paper hats all day over three kinds of pudding. Boxing Day was Christmas Day 2 with the whole family- although instead of a walk through the field and by the river like every year before, I was napping on my sister’s sofa because 1) Braxton Hicks decided that day was the day it wanted to shout hello and 2) it was raining heavily.

So pregnancy. I am so thankful we’re having a baby but man. Man. Pregnancy is hard. When you hear that before you’re pregnant, you’re just like okay sure. But no. I am grabbing you by the shoulders here and eyeballing you to say pregnancy is hard. My husband had to tie up my shoelaces the other day because I couldn’t bend down properly to do it myself. I mean, I can bend down, but suddenly I feel like I’m squeezing every organ and baby inside of me including my lungs and oh please just do it for me instead please?  Sneezing is a deadly game of is my pelvic floor ready for this or not? Your back hurts and you’re not sure why, walking 10 steps will have you breathing like a little hobgoblin, and you will no longer be able to blame your other half for using up all the loo roll because guess what, yes it’s you that’s the culprit now. And this is all after you’ve spent weeks wanting to throw up all day. I can’t believe my mother did this four times. FOUR. What a nutcase.

Everyone is rounding up their year, and it’s usually something I do too- but I don’t know, how do I sum up 2017? The beginning of big change? Everything we did or every trip we went on, always had an air of ‘is this it, the last of just us two?’ (at least for me anyway, I’m sure Robin would side eye)

But now next year two will become three at long last, and I have no doubt that life will be thrown upside down for a while; I am A-OK with that.
