Life Lately | The First Week

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][dropcap]T[/dropcap]hat’s the first week of January done and dusted! That wasn’t so bad was it? The clock ticked along nicely. I’ve only answered “How was your New Year?” about eleventy billion times and I didn’t even mind. Of course, the first day of the ‘real’ start of January begins with a tube strike and a painfully slow journey to work, but that’s not going to be bother me- Oh No! This post is all about the mindfulness and wellness and all of the good’ness’ that I’m hoping to inject into this month, oh yes.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=”READING” color=”custom” border_width=”2″ accent_color=”#ff8d6b”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1516900973257{padding-top: 80px !important;padding-right: 40px !important;padding-bottom: 80px !important;padding-left: 40px !important;background-color: #f8f3f0 !important;}”]

Penguin sent over A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled by Ruby Wax and I’m surprised by how much of it I can empathise with. I’m taking small steps to be more mindful and its a refreshing read from Ruby’s bitingly funny point of view. Raise your hand for every time you muttered an ‘I’m fine’ whenever someone asked- when in reality your mind was a chaotic whirl. I enjoyed this more than I anticipated; good for all frazzled minds.

If 2015 and 2016 were the kind of years that fried my well being, then this is the year I’m determined to flip that around. In an effort to unwind one night, I ran a bath intending to soak until I wrinkled and focus on nothing else apart from my book. 5 minutes later there’s a scratch at the door. And a little wailing meow. I give up, let the rascals in and my relaxing zen bath time becomes fish-for-toes time. Who run the world? Cats.

I discovered at the doctor’s that I was 1) anaemic and 2) my metabolism is as confused as I am. My iron prescription left me feeling awful- I’d rather take the anaemia thanks– so instead I bought some vitamin B12’s & iron from Holland and Barratts & I don’t feel so terrible anymore. Energised and awake rather than ready to nap on my desk. I WALKED HOME on #TubeStrike Day. Who am I?

So yes, it was Tube Strike day, and it took forever and a day to get to work this morning. I just listened to the radio and zoned out on the bus, so really it wasn’t too bad. The way home however, was a little challenging because I got it into my head that I could walk it- what’s 4 miles in the rain?! The bus queues were enormous and traffic was so slow, I felt more productive just mosying along on my own. I walked past the canal, found an alleyway of classic cars, and found so many cute shop fronts. It was actually even a little bit pleasant; and hello there new Stik figures. See? Always look up.

I’ve missed cooking. Months without a kitchen has made me appreciate home cooked food. I missed the preparation and the smells of something yummy wafting in the oven. And obviously- I’ve missed putting together recipe posts! I’ve got one coming up lickety split. Making brunch for lunch and dinner on the weekends is my new thing at the moment- eggs and salmon for days!
