[dropcap]K[/dropcap]ind of like a mogwai creature, there should be a curfew for my last cup of coffee for the day. Necking an espresso at 7 o’clock in the evening probably wasn’t my best decision, but coming to a sweet East London cafe to meet a blogging heroine was- that is, Natalie Holbrook, the blogger behind Hey Natalie Jean. I’ve followed her blog for years-from just after she had her son, Huck- and it was her wit and musings on New York that kept me coming back for more. Her book was just released last month and hooray hoorah she was doing a whistle stop tour through Europe, including London. I had to go.
After a short reading from her book (an excerpt from the My Own Private Idaho chapter) for the next hour or so we just picked her brains; family, blogging, funny stories, the book writing process, and a little about speaking at The Hive conference on Saturday (she spoke about staying true and strong in blogging) which meant we chatted a bit about negativity on the internet. Basically, about anything and everything really.
I have never been to a book club, but I imagine it would be something similar, except the author is present. And you talk about space cakes. Or take selfies.
I also got to meet a familiar face, Sarah, after following one another on Twitter for awhile. We talked weddings and tattoos- she has an awesome Tattoo series on her blog, that you should check out!
My eyes sweeping the room, I noticed that every woman present was so different from one another yet here we all were wanting to meet Natalie like an old friend. Something about her writing makes you feel like the two of you could be great friends. And in person, she was just so sincere and funny and made time for everyone. How you read her blog is exactly the way she talks, and has in fact set the biggest example of sticking to my true voice on this blog.
Two hours zoomed by, and I left feeling buzzy and full of positivity. Natalie is your every girl, and what she’s achieved is really inspiring, and I’m feeling all YEAAAAH I can do this, I’m gonna do this! You know? Like, in my head I’m doing a Michael Jordan slam dunk.
I posted a little video of the book reading on Snapchat, so if you are a snap chatter- my username is theawkwardblog. I’m still getting the hang of it, but mostly I have been watching snapchats of Coachella and the Quidditch World Cup. I like it.
And since we touched on internet bullies and the like, to see us out, Donnie Wahlberg and NKOTB ladies and gentleman (if only to hear him sneer “positivity is not about being soft, it’s about being smart, you suckerrrrr”)
