[dropcap]I[/dropcap]s there anything nicer than a fresh bouquet of sharp pencils? Earlier, for the first time in years, I made an impulse buy at WH Smith… I kept circling the Stationery section, picking up different sketch pads and watercolour pencils, and before I knew it, I was taking an A6 sketch pad and a tin of 24 watercolour pencils over to the till. I haven’t been in the mood to paint or draw for years and for some reason, I just didn’t want to leave the shop without them.
I spent most of my A’Level years hiding in the art studio with the radio blasting, literally trowelling paint onto large canvases. Since then, I’ve barely picked up anything remotely artistic- not a pencil or a brush- until my lame attempt at life drawing a couple of years ago (although my friend Ava will have some questionable doodles to show) But here I was again, with the itch to paint! With watercolours! Which is a little weird in itself, since watercolours were never my thing-I was far too heavy handed with paint to handle the subtlety of watercolour. As soon as I got home, I settled onto the floor (the best spot to get creative and crafty in my humble opinion) with my shiny new tin of pencils, brushes, bowl of water, and my tiny sketch pad.
…I didn’t want to draw anything in particular, but I did want to use rich, sumptuous colours. I ended up doodling a big pair of red lips- and even though I’m really out of practice and the proportions are all wrong, and they look a little Jessica Rabbit like, I’d like to think my first attempt back into painting isn’t too bad! Rusty, yes. But it’s still there somewhere.
